Afamelanotide

Afamelanotide is a synthetic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone whose established clinical role is increasing pain-free light exposure in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria. The controlled-release prescription implant Scenesse stimulates protective skin pigment, helping address the severe light-triggered pain of this inherited disorder. Randomized trials and subsequent treatment registries support this disease-specific use. Earlier pigmentation experiments and a vitiligo add-on trial provide additional biological context with their own formulations, comparators and outcomes.
