Cerebrolysin

Cerebrolysin is a mixture of small peptides and free amino acids made from porcine brain proteins and supplied as an injectable solution. It has been studied in people after stroke and in dementia, as well as in animal experiments on cell survival and repair. The clinical findings vary with the setting: a rehabilitation trial found better arm-and-hand task performance, while the large CASTA acute-stroke trial did not establish its planned overall benefit. Those findings, the mixture’s identity and uncertainty about serious unwanted events are central to understanding the product.
