GHK-Cu is a copper-bound tripeptide studied in connective-tissue biology and specific topical skin and ulcer preparations. Epithalon, also called Epitalon, is AEDG, a four-residue peptide studied in telomere maintenance and aging-related models. GHK-Cu’s human skin results vary by preparation and setting; Epitalon’s telomere findings do not establish human rejuvenation. No direct trial identified here ranks their effects on skin aging or longevity.

A copper complex and a separate four-residue peptide
GHK-Cu is glycyl-histidyl-lysine coordinated with copper(II). The copper-bound complex, copper-free GHK and a finished cream or gel are distinct experimental materials. A skin-care regimen can also contain ingredients beyond the peptide. Interpretation therefore begins with the preparation and comparison used in the particular report. Maquart et al. (1988).
Epithalon is a spelling variant of Epitalon, the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, abbreviated AEDG. FDA separately describes its free base and acetate forms. Epithalamin is the pineal-gland extract discussed in older clinical reports, whereas AEDG is a defined four-residue peptide. The 266-person report of Epithalamin and Thymalin extracts cannot supply a human mortality effect for synthetic AEDG. FDA (2026), Khavinson et al. (2003).
The main differences
What exact materials do the names describe?
Molecular identity and the finished formulation determine which findings apply.
GHK-Cu
GHK-Cu is the copper(II) complex of Gly-His-Lys. The copper-bound complex, copper-free GHK and a finished topical regimen require separate interpretation; the human studies used specified skin-care or wound preparations.

Epitalon
Epithalon is another spelling of Epitalon, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). Its free base and acetate are separately described forms. Epithalamin is a pineal extract, so its older human mortality report is not a synthetic-AEDG trial.

What did the main cell experiments physically change?
Collagen production and telomere maintenance are different measurements in separate cell systems.
GHK-Cu
GHK-Cu-exposed fibroblasts made more collagen without a corresponding increase in cell number. The experiment measured a structural protein produced by cultured cells; it did not measure wrinkles or lifespan.
Epitalon
Normal fibroblast and mammary epithelial cultures had longer telomeres, the protective structures at chromosome ends, and increased activity of telomerase, an enzyme that maintains those ends, after three weeks of Epitalon relative to untreated cells. Breast-cancer cultures showed a different pattern involving alternative telomere lengthening. Figures 1–3 were corrected.

What human outcomes have been measured?
The selected reports involve different populations, preparations and outcomes, preventing a clinical ranking.
GHK-Cu
After laser resurfacing, thirteen completers had no established objective advantage in redness, wrinkles or skin quality from a GHK-Cu regimen, although their questionnaire favored it. A separate diabetic-ulcer gel trial reported greater median plantar-wound area closure, 98.5% versus 60.8%, alongside standardized care.

Epitalon
In FDA’s account, forty women with low urinary melatonin-metabolite values were assigned to AEDG or saline placebo, with thirty-five additional age-normal reference women. After twenty days, metabolite output rose 1.7-fold with AEDG and remained unchanged with placebo. Sleep and systematic safety outcomes were not reported. The older 266-person longevity report used Epithalamin/Thymalin extracts.

Is a human half-life or duration of benefit established?
Later local or cellular effects are not measurements of circulating intact peptide.
GHK-Cu
The selected skin and wound studies do not provide a validated human blood half-life for GHK-Cu. Their topical products also cannot define exposure after injection.

Epitalon
FDA’s evaluation found only preliminary rabbit fluorescent-label distribution information without showing that the signal specifically represented intact Epitalon. No validated human blood half-life follows from these sources.
Which findings most limit broad anti-aging or safety claims?
A favorable laboratory marker and a narrowly studied formulation cannot establish whole-body rejuvenation or long-term clinical safety.
GHK-Cu
Objective post-laser benefits remained uncertain, and a separate venous-ulcer cream trial did not establish better healing than its base. FDA raises injection-specific immune-reaction and impurity concerns; these topical results cannot establish injectable safety.

Epitalon
The female-mouse survival study did not establish an increase in mean lifespan, despite longer survival at the tail. The corrected cell study also altered telomere maintenance in cancer-cell cultures. Neither estimates long-term human cancer risk or proves a longevity benefit, and FDA identifies major human safety gaps.

GHK-Cu research followed production of connective-tissue material
Maquart and colleagues exposed cultured fibroblasts, cells that make connective-tissue proteins, to GHK-Cu. Collagen production increased without a corresponding increase in cell number. That distinction means the result concerned what the cells produced, rather than simply a larger cell population. Maquart et al. (1988).
A separate rat experiment implanted mesh wound chambers and compared repeated local GHK-Cu exposure with saline. The collected chambers contained more collagen, glycosaminoglycans and other tissue material under effective conditions; collagen stimulation was about twice that of noncollagen proteins. Type I and III collagen RNA increased, while TGF-β RNA did not. A separate control tripeptide did not establish a comparable response. The experiment measured accumulation within an artificial wound environment, without measuring human wrinkle appearance or whole-body rejuvenation. Maquart et al. (1993).
GHK-Cu’s clinical findings depend on the skin problem and preparation
Miller and colleagues randomized post-laser skin-care regimens with or without GHK-Cu after resurfacing around the mouth. Thirteen patients completed twelve weeks. Computer analysis and blinded evaluators did not establish faster resolution of redness or an additional improvement in wrinkles or overall skin quality with the GHK-Cu regimen. Patient-rated overall skin quality favored that regimen (P=0.04). The small sample and difference between objective and questionnaire results leave the additional cosmetic benefit uncertain. Miller et al. (2006).
A separate randomized evaluator-blinded diabetic-ulcer study compared a specific GHK-Cu preparation, lamin Gel, with the gel base alongside standardized wound care. Median plantar-ulcer area closure was 98.5% with lamin Gel and 60.8% with the base (P<0.05). These percentages describe reduction in wound area, not the percentage of every patient whose ulcer completely healed. The primary abstract does not supply a complete analysis denominator for that estimate. Mulder et al. (1994).
The favorable diabetic-ulcer result does not erase a separate venous-ulcer trial. Among 86 evaluable completers, the tripeptide-copper cream did not establish better ulcer-size reduction than its inert cream base; silver sulfadiazine cream performed better than either. Differences in disease, wound care and formulations prevent combining these studies into one general GHK-Cu effect. None establishes effectiveness or safety of injecting GHK-Cu. Bishop et al. (1992).
Epitalon lengthened telomeres through different cellular processes
Telomeres are protective DNA–protein structures at chromosome ends. The 2003 Epithalon report described telomerase-related expression, enzyme activity and longer telomeres after adding the peptide to human fetal fibroblasts. These human-derived cells were outside the body, and the study did not measure health or lifespan in treated people. Khavinson et al. (2003).
Al-dulaimi and colleagues later compared untreated cells with Epitalon-exposed normal fibroblast and mammary epithelial cultures and two breast-cancer cell lines. The IBR.3 normal fibroblasts did not show telomere lengthening after four days. After three weeks, both normal fibroblast and mammary epithelial cultures had longer telomeres and increased telomerase activity. The cancer-cell lines showed telomere lengthening after four days without a corresponding clear increase in telomerase activity; the results instead implicated alternative lengthening of telomeres, or ALT, a different maintenance process. Figures 1–3 were replaced in a published correction and belong to this same study. Al-dulaimi et al. (2025), Al-dulaimi et al. (2026).
The different pathways are consequential because longer telomeres can describe different cellular states. The experiment did not establish that normal cells became healthier, that treated people lived longer or that a long-term cancer risk was absent. GHK-Cu’s collagen-production findings and Epitalon’s telomere measurements also address different physical changes, so their magnitudes cannot be compared as a common measure of anti-aging activity.
Animal survival and human biomarkers answer narrower questions
In a lifetime study of female Swiss-derived SHR mice, 54 animals receiving Epitalon were compared with 54 saline controls. The experiment did not establish an increase in mean lifespan. Mean lifespan among the last tenth of survivors rose 13.3%, and maximum lifespan rose 12.3%. These survival-tail findings should not be converted into a 12–13% increase in average lifespan, and the result does not estimate added years for people. Anisimov et al. (2003).
The human AEDG report measured melatonin-related biomarkers. FDA’s detailed account describes seventy-five women aged forty to fifty, mainly night-shift workers: thirty-five had age-normal urinary values and served as a reference, while forty with low values were assigned to AEDG or saline placebo for twenty days. The urinary melatonin-breakdown product rose 1.7-fold in the AEDG group and did not change with placebo; body-clock gene expression also changed. Blinding was unspecified, sleep outcomes were not measured and systematic safety data were not reported. These biomarkers remain distinct from the mortality claims in the older extract literature. Ivko et al. (2021), FDA (2026).
Clinical exposure and safety remain preparation-specific
The selected topical GHK-Cu reports measured local skin or wound outcomes and do not provide a validated blood half-life for an injected preparation. FDA’s current GHK-Cu concern specifically addresses injectable routes, citing limited human safety data and potential immune reactions from aggregation or peptide impurities. A topical study cannot resolve those injection-specific issues. FDA (2026).
For Epitalon, FDA describes a preliminary rabbit fluorescent-label distribution experiment whose tissue signal was not shown to specifically represent intact peptide. It identified no additional pharmacokinetic studies in that evaluation. The sources therefore supply no validated human blood-concentration curve or half-life. FDA also identifies substantial gaps in human safety and product characterization for the proposed substances. FDA (2026).
GHK-Cu has some formulation-specific human outcomes, including conflicting objective results across skin and ulcer settings. Epitalon has cell-maintenance, animal and limited human-biomarker findings. A fair clinical comparison would need the same population, a specified product and a shared health outcome. No such head-to-head comparison was identified in this selected review.
Frequently asked questions
Do collagen production and telomere length measure the same kind of rejuvenation?
They measure different physical events. Fibroblast collagen production concerns structural material; telomere assays concern chromosome ends. A study must measure a shared functional or clinical outcome before those changes can support a comparative health claim.
Did the laser study show that GHK-Cu never works on skin?
It left the added objective benefit uncertain in thirteen completers after a particular laser procedure and skin-care regimen. Its favorable patient questionnaire and uncertain objective findings both belong in the interpretation; the study cannot determine the effect of every formula.
Was 98.5% the proportion of diabetic ulcers that completely healed?
That figure was the median percentage reduction in plantar-ulcer area with lamin Gel. It is not the percentage of all participants whose ulcer closed completely. The original abstract also does not supply a full denominator for that estimate.
Did Epitalon increase average mouse lifespan by 12.3%?
The 12.3% figure described maximum lifespan in one female-mouse experiment. The experiment did not establish an increase in mean lifespan, while mean survival among the last tenth of survivors rose 13.3%.
Does Epitalon’s cell study establish either cancer safety or cancer harm in people?
The study observed different telomere-maintenance responses in normal and cancer-cell cultures. It did not treat people or measure cancer incidence. That leaves a clinically relevant safety question without a quantified clinical risk.
