Elamipretide

Elamipretide, also called SS-31, is a synthetic peptide developed to influence the membrane environment in which mitochondria produce cellular energy. Its experiments connect the lipid cardiolipin with electron transfer, muscle performance and a rare inherited disease called Barth syndrome. Human results vary with the population and the outcome: the large MMPOWER-3 mitochondrial-myopathy trial failed its walking and fatigue endpoints, while Forzinity received FDA accelerated approval in September 2025 to improve muscle strength in adults and children with Barth syndrome weighing at least 30 kg. Understanding that decision requires following the small Barth trial through its controlled phase and its longer, uncontrolled extension. MMPOWER-3 report, FDA approval announcement.
